Albert Fert and Peter Gruenberg - fathers of MP3!

This is about two physicists who won this year's Nobel prize for their pioneering work in giant magnetoresistance.

"The MP3 and iPod industry would not have existed without this discovery," Borje Johansson, a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences told The Associated Press. "You would not have an iPod without this effect."
What can I say? I am not sure whether to laugh or to cry. If the whole purpose of all these hundreds (thousands?) years of slow and painful evolution of science was to culminate in a pimply teenager piercing his eardrums by the sound of some shitty singer or a shitty band...

I only hope nobody tells them about it - they would dearly wish they had thought about contraceptives at the time.
