Asteroid Apophis scare: clarification required urgently

Fair and Balanced tells:

In 2004, NASA scientists announced that there was a chance that Apophis, an asteroid larger than two football fields, could smash into Earth in 2029.
Could someone with NASA connections please call somebody there and check whether it's American football they meant or is it what they call "soccer"? Many thanks in advance.

It's NASA, America's space agency, so presumably they mean American football. That makes it a bigger asteroid, doesn't it?

American football field: 120*53 yards = 6360 square yards.

Football field: 100*60 yards = 6000 ...

Yes, you are right. More bang.

Don't worry Snoopy, the odds are overwhelming against Apophis hitting the Earth.

A bit more current matter: "Reports: Mubarak May Step Down" at http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/02/10/501364/main20031324.shtml?tag=stack
Mubarak is going to address the Egyptian people tonight on TV. Hopefully he will do a Nixon and announce his resignation.

Note: Egyptians have invented a new humorous phrase, "to Mubarak" which has several meanings; the leading one is to refer to a house guest who will not leave!

Yep, I heard the news too. The big question is what will happen afterward.

And re Mubarak - check this place tomorrow.

Any bets on where it will land? I've got a fiver on Mecca. Would do wonders for the place. The more religious amongst us could name it: The Hand of G-d!

Yeah... there are many places could benefit from some renovation. Apophis as hand of G-D? Sounds cool enough.

I thought they were close to the same size fields. Just trying to be funny, eh?

Don't get excited about NASA. They're also flogging global warming.

Yep. That recurrent motiff about asteroid that gonna annihilate us all is getting a bit... stale, I would say.

Besides, we are doing it quite well without outside help, thank you.

Hmm if it were "soccer" then the destruction iof any Premier League ground would please me no end - but not when a match is on of course!
