A question of color

I freely confess (not for the first time, too) in being ignorant on many aspects of US politics, history and whatnot. This article only added to my state of general confusion. Not going into all the names of people and political groups mentioned in the article, I would like to clarify only one question related to this picture:

The uniforms on these New Black Panthers folks: aren't they brown rather than black? Or am I getting color blind on top of all them other ailments?

I think they are black. It is the contrast with brown skin that tricks one into thinking the uniforms are brown, I think.

Why don't I buy this explanation, zkharya?

Yes the uniforms are definitely black, though not very stylish. They cannot compare to Mussolini's Black Shirts. Now those were folks dressed in a type of black that was very fashionable! (joke)

The color involved in the following story is very much a bright red:
"ACORN Foe James O'Keefe Sought to Embarrass CNN's Abbie Boudreau on Porn-Strewn 'Palace of Pleasure' Boat" at http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20018030-503544.html?tag=stack

I still suspect they are brown, David. As for the Boudreau / O'Keefe story: yeah, it is bright red. And quite stupid, too.

It's a trick of the light.  I'm thinking the uniforms are black.

Which, undoubtedly, makes them sweaty and uncomfortable in that hot sun.
