Pussy Riot

Members of the Russian girl-band "Pussy Riot" are no pussies. They knew what they were risking protesting against Putin's regime.

Yes, their band's name brings a silly smile to my face too. And I do hope that Dick, who is one of our "regulars", will comment on this post. Yet what is happening to the young mothers Mary and Nadya is as serious as it gets.

The girls were upset that the Russian Orthodox Patriarch openly supported Putin during the recent "elections". So they smuggled a guitar into the Mafia-built kitch Temple of Christ the Saviour. They spent 40 seconds jumping up and down near the altar and afterwards, in the studio, used the footage to record a "prayer" song for Putin to be deposed. They called it "action", which makes it a Pussy Riot Action.

Guess what punishment is in store for Mary and Nadya? Seven (!) years. They are charged with a criminal offence under a law normally reserved for organized criminals for premeditated acts committed using arms. You get a maximum of 5 years for manslaughter. They are in prison now awaiting trial.

Russian church officials first called for a stiff punishment. Eventually they figured the servants of Jesus were not going to win this particular "PR war" and called for "kindness". Putin has personally interfered in the girls' "apostasy" trial, calling for a stiff penalty.

Meanwhile, some Russian Orthodox Christians have been calling the families of the arrested girls threatening to disembowel their children.

One has to wonder whether Russian men will ever grow balls or if they will prefer the safety of shame in the shade of Pussies' bravery.

Nadya and her daughter.

Mary and her daughter. Mary is a single mum

Brillant satire. It seems these pussies are some of the few Russians with balls, metaphorically speaking. Maybe they can encourage other Russians to grow their own set and take on Putin & Co.

Well, you are right, but it will still take a lot of time.

Desecration of Churches and insulting Christians as a publicity stunt. You know they don't have the courage to do this is a synagogue or mosque. They didn't think the Christians would react, a bad calculation in a country which saw its Churches destroyed by these same type of hooligans.

I am not sure about a synagogue, Denis, but can agree about a mosque.

Specifically re the Pussy Riot - in their case there wasn't any definite desecration act, just some naughty behavior in a church. Hardly a cause for police and justice following up and, esp., for incarceration.

You don't want Christian (or Jewish) clerics start behaving like their Muslim colleagues, I hope.
