Our Weasel Of The Week!

Once again, It's time to present this week's statuette of shame, The Golden Weasel!!

Every Tuesday, the Council nominates some of the slimiest, most despicable characters in public life for some deed of evil, cowardice or corruption they’ve performed. Then we vote to single out one particular Weasel for special mention, to whom we award the statuette of shame, our special, 100% plastic Golden Weasel. This week's nominees were all despicable, but the votes are in and we have our winner...the envelope please...

New York City's Kommissar Bill de Blasio!!

The Noisy Room : Mayor Bill de Blasio for his faux sorrow and commiseration after the shooting of the two cops in New York this weekend.

After throwing the NYPD under the bus over Garner and dissing the attack on cops a week ago by seven protesters, he comes out and dares to show his face at the press conference for the execution style murders of two officers in New York yesterday. At the end of which, he broke into crappy Spanish. The police union has called for him to be barred from all police funerals for turning his back on the NYPD.

Turn about is fair play... the officers turned their backs on de Blasio at his press conference. When he showed up at the hospital where the two deceased cops were, with family, friends and comrades grieving, he tried to say he was one of them and was told by at least one officer he was not welcome or one of them and was told to leave. With all that blue blood on his hands, de Blasio should just resign and slink away. He's a cowardly weasel that has brought Marxism, violence and murder to New York.

Ah yes, Mayor Bill De Blasio, an excellent example of what it looks like when the inmates take over the asylum. Even the stupidest, meanest banana republic dictator usually knows enough to remember to keep on the good side of the people keeping civil order, protecting him and his family and keeping the regime in power. Even the mayor's old commie buddies the Sandinistas understood that much ...but not Mayor de Blasio!

It takes real talent to be that stupid. I mean, the local stores complain about some ne'er do well with a huge rap sheet peddling illegal smokes and taking away their business, the cops some and tell him to leave, he refuses, he resists arrest and dies from a heart attack. A grand jury looks at the evidence, finds that the police did nothing wrong. And not only does the mayor side with the rioters against his own police force, he throws gasoline on the fire, perhaps even to the point of getting a couple of them killed. He even smirks in public about having what he and other racialists and cop-haters have called 'the conversation' about the dangers of 'racist police' with his own bi-racial son...the same kid who goes nowhere without an NYPD security blanket composed of police prepared to risk their lives to save his child!

There's stupid, and then there's pathetic. So Mayor de Blasio richly deserves his Golden Weasel.

Let's have a nice hand for a couple of members of the NYPD's union, The Patrolman's Benevolent Association, who were nice enough to come down to pick up the mayor's award for him, and not only that, they plan to customize it with some decorations, tributes and engraving of their own before they deliver it to his office!

Is that nice or what?

Well, there it is.

Check back next Tuesday to see who next week's nominees for Weasel of the Week are!

Make sure to tune in every Monday for the Watcher’s Forum, and remember, every Wednesday, the Council has its weekly contest with the members nominating two posts each, one written by themselves and one written by someone from outside the group for consideration by the whole Council. The votes are cast by the Council, and the results are posted on Friday morning.

It’s a weekly magazine of some of the best stuff written in the blogosphere, and you won’t want to miss it...or any of the other fantabulous Watcher's Council content.

And don’t forget to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter..’cause we’re cool like that, y'know?

Fidel and China? I missed that one. He always seemed to love the Soviets best.

The unintended consequence of reading microagression reports - macro aggression. This of course is to be directed towards men - well white men - well white men who like women.

Indeed, people who shout "microagression!" and similar bullshit do not hesitate to use macro aggression toward others, whom they consider politically incorrect.

Hi Snoops!
I'm afraid that as friends must sometimes, we'll have to agree to disagree.

"I shall probably never figure out what it is about Cuba that makes the
best and brightest of Americans lose their sense of logic and their
famous pragmatism. "

Simple. It's a hostile entity 90 miles from our shores. Isn't Russia is getting even more aggressive about Crimea, Ukraine and missile defense systems in Eastern Europe that are even farther away? As an Israeli, I think you understand the problem of having hostile people with dangerous weapons in proximity to major population centers.

I agree with Yoani. I'd absolutely love it if normalizing relations meant more prosperity and liberty for the Cuban people. But as she says, since Obama is giving the Castros what they want for nothing and since Raul Castro made it very plain that there will be no increased political liberty inherent in any normalization, I see no reason to throw this fascist regime a lifeline to keep it in power. Nor are we going to 'be there first.' If they ally with anyone, it won't be America, but an ideological soul mate. They will do just what the Soviets did, take us for whatever they can get and then ally with our enemies.

As I wrote in the Forum, this is going to turn into a foreign policy nightmare.

If America had a decent president, we would be working to encourage dissidents and topple the regime. We're not, and we should be. It's a pity JFK was such a wuss about going through with what he started and invading the place...the Cuban people would have been spared much misery, the Monroe Doctrine reaffirmed and an important security risk turned into an ally.

It would be wonderful if we were simply able to go in and co-opt the Castro regime. it isn't going to happen, and a look at what Raul Castro had to say tells us that. Any tourism is going to be one way and carefully vetted with 'minders' just the way it was in the old USSR, the Internet is going to be highly censored and any financial benefits are going to be limited to the regime and its elites.

I would also point out that it obvious that many Cubans already understand that the regime is full of it when they blame the evil Yanquis for the poverty on the island, any more than the majority of people behind the Iron Curtain bought the Soviet's BS. Otherwise, why would so may of them risk their lives to come here? If the Castros opened the borders, how many people who were able to leave do you think would stay? What a lot of them probably despise a lot more than America is Europeans and some Americans who come to Cuba to take advantage of that poverty for sex tourism.

I'm afraid I also have to quibble at your statement that it was the carrot that destroyed the Soviet Union where the stick failed. It was the years of detente and things like U.S. grain shipments that kept the Evil Empire alive.

What destroyed the system IMO was Reagan's correctly labeling the USSR as the Evil Empire it was, his walking away from yet another futile agreement in Iceland, Pope Paul working with us in helping to stir up the natives in places like Poland, America aiding the Afghans in bleeding the Soviets in their own Vietnam and a massive US defense buildup the Soviets went broke trying to keep up with. That was the stick, the way I see it.

Gorbachev didn't do 'perestroika' because he wanted to, he did it as a last ditch effort to try and preserve his corrupt system. And it failed.

Anyway, Snoops, that's my two agorat ; )

Shavua Tov,
Rob

Hi Rob,

Of course, disagreeing between Jews is just one of the more positive signs of friendship. I shall try to respond (or to attack, as it happens) a few of your points:

"Simple. It's a hostile entity 90 miles from our shores." Sure, that much I have added in the afterword - I totally understand that cause of American's loss of pragmatism and sometimes even common sense when Cuba is the subject.

"Obama is giving the Castros what they want for nothing" So it seems, so it seems for the moment indeed. But the social undercurrents, aided by information exchange, sometimes do more than any official signed documents. Patience is the keyowrd here, and, like Yoani, I hope for better.

"If America had a decent president, we would be working to encourage dissidents and topple the regime. We're not, and we should be." Without going into the subject deeper, I can only say that POTUS-es come and go...

"a look at what Raul Castro had to say tells us that" I mentioned that Castro's speech in the afterword: so much hot air, without any ability to support his crap. As I said, what do you expect from the old coot?

"I'm afraid I also have to quibble at your statement that it was the carrot that destroyed the Soviet Union where the stick failed." The Reagan's actions and Afghanistan definitely played a role, but if you think that it is the main factor in the demise of USSR, think again. Look high far from the desired are the current sanctions on Russia because of the Crimea and other Ukrainian shenanigans. All the sanctions have done so far is raising Putin's popularity to the hitherto unseen height.

Anyway, I am optimistic about the outlook for Cuba in the future. Some investment and a lot of patience will see the current regime into the grave, and I hope we shall both see it.

And, as you know, I am one of the most pessimistic people on this planet ;-)

Best.

Thanks Snoop.
I certainly hope you're right and I'm wrong on this one.
