I suspect it's just a way of relieving some pressure.

Israel bans Arab parties from running in upcoming elections

The Central Elections Committee (CEC) yesterday banned the Arab parties United Arab List-Ta'al and Balad from running in next month's parliamentary elections amid accusations of racism from Arab MKs. Both parties intend to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court.

Members of the CEC conceded yesterday that the chance of the Supreme Court's upholding the ban on both parties was slim.

The only thing extremists breed is more extremists - on the other side.

In this regard I had a refreshing experience listening to the radio interview with Benjamin Begin, one of the Likud notables today. He was clearly against this punitive and destructive idea. Nice to know that, while you are in disagreement with a man, you can still respect his integrity - it goes in the family, apparently.

I hope the Supreme Court gives them a finger - and the sooner the better.

That little UCI chameleon

Where do you hide a leaf? In a tree, of course. It is kindergarten stuff.

Where do you hide a Jew? No, not in the woods, Jews don't take to the woods willingly - unless forced to. The right answer is: in UCI or, in simple words - UC Irvine, the infamous branch of Californian higher education that is a nest of so rabid anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic sentiment, that even the the US Senate Judiciary Committee was forced to deal with it (there is a lot more info on the goings-on in UCI, but google for it yourself - we are concerned with the Hiding Of The Jew here.)

So how does a Jew hide himself? First of all, by adjusting his external "look and feel". To start with - that dead giveaway Levine (or Levin) surname you grandpa brought upon your head - wouldn't it be better to call yourself LeVine? Tres chic - and some people may even decide you are French, and the sky is your limit then! In addition, you assume an image of an olden times hippie - to make your students feel easier with you, of course:

I've never been around UCI campus so I can't tell - maybe they still think they are in the sixties, but in any case its' a bit pathetic, so enough with look and feel.

But that's all external. What's important for you, if you want to hide real well, is to absorb that for which UCI is so famous. You start about here:

But the above, if you wish, is not a libel - it's just a working theory, no need for proof and hardly a basis for legal proceedings. Rest assured, our professor can do better yet, and here it comes - a piece in Al Jazeera (nice venue, ain't it?). It's a long article, full or usual tropes so beloved by the recent anti-Israeli propaganda that it's hardly worth your time - maybe somebody else could wade through all this patiently. But one passage riveted the attention of Michael Brenner, a lawyer and a blogger (and many other nice things, no doubt). Here is that passage:

Additionally, numerous flippant remarks by senior Israeli politicians and generals, including Tzipi Livni, the foreign minister, refusing to make a distinction between civilian people and institutions and fighters - "Hamas doesn't ... and neither should we" is how Livni puts it - are rightly being seen as admissions of war crimes.

Michael, understandably, was fired up by this obviously criminal remark coming from one of our current VIPs (wouldn't you?). So, being a careful person (and a lawyer, lest you forget), he decided to check the whole story, and found indeed that Ms Livni doesn't want to make a distinction... between Israeli Arabs and Israeli Jews. Here comes the real McCoy:

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said during the meeting, "On my way here I heard that Hamas declared the man killed by a rocket in Ashkelon 'one of the Zionists' despite being an Israeli Arab. They don't make a distinction, and neither should we."

I don't think that this quote requires an explanation. But its' equally easy to see what happens when one takes (on purpose, of course) the last sentence out of the context. It is a sad fact that it was taken out of the context and used in the not-quite friendly to Israel way by a Jew. But let's not forget the wider context - the Hiding Of The Jew!

Blood libel against a Jew is not exactly a new thing, but it's done by another Jew in this case. Unfortunately it is quite popular in the last quarter of the XX century and is becoming more popular now with other chameleons on various campuses.

What else about the story? Michael Brenner wrote an exceedingly polite message to professor LeVine, expressing his doubts about the veracity of the quote in the Al Jazeera article. Mr Levine responded by several garbled messages that look like something produced in a thick haze of some controlled substance - no, I am not making any allegations here, it is just that... oh what the heck - it looks even more pathetic than the first quote in this post, and it's a pity I cannot produce the texts here. I would be glad to, but I have to get Michael's permission to do so first.

Well, what can I say for a conclusion? If I were an anti-Israeli (let alone anti-Semitic) student in UCI... No, even better - if I were a whole gang of anti-Israeli students of UCI, I would make professor LeVine our totem. Being carried on a pole, fed constantly and prayed to as a minor deity. And anointed (er... shmeared in simple words) - by oils, aromatic or other, and don't forget the animal fat - it works on a minor deity anytime.

Make it (the fat) kosher halal, though...

Naomi Klein in "The Beauty and the Beast"

I am sorry that I cannot be 100% serious about Naomi Klein, with all due respect to her genealogy (coming as she does from a long line of pacifist Jooish folks), to her education (or, rather, the lack of it - it is difficult to reconcile what she says about herself on her site with the dry language of Wiki), to her books and other achievements that witness her popularity, if not her penetrating wisdom.

I am not going to argue the pointed remarks and speeches she makes re punishment of them Zionists, because David Hirsh has made mincemeat of her position with ease and elegance fitting a (real) scholar. So I would like to dedicate this post to the style rather than substance. Style is all important sometimes, you just have to agree.

After you've read the above, close your eyes and listen, just listen to the words in the headline. Do you hear the familiar shrill notes that Jews heard so many times in their history? Do you detect the histrionics? The passion to punish? Don't you feel some words missing in that headline and clamoring to be added - to continue the list of punishments?

Another Dmitry: The last world war

The last translation (from the Jewish journalist Dmitry Sidorov) wasn't a fact-based commentary, rather an emotional response to the goings-on here. What I said in that post. Upon second thought - there definitely is a place for purely emotional reaction to a war. Here comes another Dmitry - Dmitry Voronkov, a Russian (Muscovite) bard and writer, with an emotional outcry named "The last world war". Again, translated using Google translator with some corrections. Is it necessary to say that I may not agree with some of Dmitry's statements? I don't know and don't care.

In my opinion, the Jews don't fight for their safety. They fight for my world, for my values, for my culture. And for most of my associates, whom I consider decent people. For all of us. They are on the edge of, perhaps, the major World War - for the values, the humans and the humanity. Which is what all the recent wars are about. Not for territory, not for resources, such as some imbeciles are trying to convince us. All this is much cheaper to buy, if human life is worth as much as it should be. And people buy it, if possible, and pay by their labor and talent to those who, most often, have not earned the payment. Or just butter these other people up . It is still cheaper than war, so let them.

[They fight] for values, and chief among them - the freedom given by God. For the opportunity to be free from all those who want to keep others in bondage, themselves being talentless loafer. Perhaps it is the last and the major war.

Palestine can not be bought. To be more precise, it takes the money - many years and from the whole world, which includes the enemy that they want to destroy - Israel. And Israel gives. From Russia, Jews are seen as totally daft and even cause hatred by this incomprehensible and humiliating the other side stupidity. What are they, the most fluffy [idiom - get it yourself]? Here [in Russia] and now the vogue is our national interests, and let everybody else croak. I just do not understand, what those interests are - even if you kill me.

But life in Palestine doesn't cost anything. The word and the dignity don't cost anything too. Forgotten. And the preachings of their holy fathers do not cause sympathy. Duty and responsibility - mere words in such a situation. There is no equivalent of the main value - human life. Even their own. What is really there to talk about the life of a Jew or an American? Why wouldn't the aunties dance on September 11 when their compatriots killed so many revolting Americans in their expensive towers? Cool, fun.

And carefree life is no cure. There is only one medicine - productive work for the benefit of society, which they have forgotten long ago. And I mean their society, the Palestinian one. And, accordingly, work education. With methods of persuasion and coercion. As the commander of my company used to say - a cookie in the mouth and a slap on the ears.

Now is the time for the slap on the ears. And the Jews do it without arrogance, with patience and self-sacrifice which very few people are capable of. Many have done so much harsher in Germany, Japan, Vietnam, Iraq or Yugoslavia, including - the Russians. Not counting neither theirs nor the others' losses when they felt right and wanted to burn the infection out. And didn't pay anything - the opposite - took reparations. With Jews it is much more self-sacrificial, with dignity of a God-chosen nation. They pay for the sins of the world, other people's sins, themselves being spit upon and crucified. In the Biblical sense, we are all Jews, physically - from Adam, and spiritually - from Jesus.

True, the Jews themselves do not go for pathos. Routinely doing what they must, protecting their homes, their children, destroying blackguards and not enjoying the death of the blackguards or their compatriots. They [the Jews] losing their children, too. And they don't expect a quick and glorious victory - they will still be spit upon, as usual in history. They don't think about the higher things. This is understandable, they are holding his rifle, not I. A rifle in the hands changes the lexicon in the way of simplicity and unprintable.

They say that they simply fight for their safety.

But I feel - for me.

Well, it looks that it took less than an year, and some masters of visual art have already absorbed the lesson provided by an unknown (to me, at least), Photoshop jockey of the last year. Here it comes, from an on-line page in Haaretz:

Notice how fragile and feeble that Merkava (Mark 3, if I am not mistaken) looks compared to the Hamasnik and, especially, to that terrible dil weapon in his huge mitts. One could rest assured that the ENEMY doesn't even have to launch it to destroy the tank - a single and not even especially strong blow will suffice.

And this in the middle of Amira Hass' article, too. I wonder whether the location is significant in this case.

So we have learned something in this line of propaganda too, after all. Of course, shouldn't have taken too much time, after all we are cousins, lets' not forget.

The problem is that we (and they) keep forgetting...

So who is in agreement with the UNSC resolution?

According to CNN, it's only UN diplomats so far:

The U.N. Security Council late Thursday overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza.

This is the only item of overwhelming agreement, because, according to the same CNN:

A senior Hamas official who had crossed the border into Egypt from Gaza said Thursday his fighters are "still strong" and vowed to continue fighting despite a continuing ground and air assault by Israel that has killed more than 700 people in the Palestinian territory.

Speaking in Rafah, Egypt, senior Hamas official Ghazi Hamid told CNN's Karl Penhaul that Hamas "will not give up" or give in to Israel's demand for immediate end to rocket attacks.

But wait, this is not the most exciting point. Here it comes:

"We will not wave the flag and we will try to protect our people, said Hamid. "But I want to say that we as Palestinian people want to live in peace, security -- but I think [Israel's] occupation force will not give us the chance."

So let me see how it goes in Hamasnik's mind:

1. We we'll not give up and continue launching the rockets (from the middle of Gasa city, but this is not the point).
2. On the other hand, we ("as Palestinian people", whatever that turn of speech means) want to live in peace [sic!] and security.
3. So why these bloodthirsty Jooz don't leave us in peace and security to continue our peaceful rocket science experiments?

And the world swallows all this readily and eagerly...

When Amira Hass accuses Hamas

This is not precisely news, but in a way it is - when one of the chief apologists for Palestinian misdeeds says it:

Even in the current conditions, Hamas is continuing to arrest those it suspects of criminal activity or Fatah membership, many of whom were arrested on the eve of the IDF operation and fled detention when the shelling began. No one knows where the detained are being held. Independent sources and those linked with Fatah say Hamas' common methods include confiscating cell-phones, beatings, house arrest and firing at a suspect's legs.

Amira doesn't express her feelings for the duration of the whole long article, so (unlike her articles on Israel) it reads like a dry recording of events, very unlikely for her.

What can I say? That, in their own inimitable way, Hamas are somewhat justified in arresting both petty criminals and Fatah members. In their turn, Fatah now can arrest Hamas members with serious criminals. It will be only fitting.

What is even more amazing, even telling about real crimes of Hamas, Amira keeps her cool:

Estimates of the number of suspects executed range from 40 to 80, but amid the prevailing conditions shelling, fear of walking the streets and media blackouts it is virtually impossible to verify the numbers or identities of the dead.

Executions are carried out secretly. In Rafah, for example, at least some of the victims were killed in a caravan erected in the area formerly occupied by the Rafiah Yam settlement, and the victims' relatives were invited to take away the bodies.

It sure takes a dedicated soul to remain so detached - doesn't it, Amira?

How soon they forget?

No, I am not angry at Brits - I am already past that point, being closer to the mood best expressed by this piece. Still, I shall never quit to wonder about this country that (go figure why!) holds, and will continue to hold for a long time, the attention of the world way above the weight it is pulling in the world affairs. So this post by Andrew Ian Dodge hit just the right cord - for me:

Having lived in the UK off and on most of my life I sometimes wonder if the country collectively has a very short memory. Considering the shrill voices against Israel defending itself one has to wonder if they have all forgotten that the UK had a terrorist problem in much of the latter half of last century. Britons where killed by bombs, mortars and murders by Irish nationalist groups.

The British government replied in kind and did as much as they could to protect it citizens from the terrorists. Imagine how Britons would have felt if the IRA and its off-shots had been firing missiles at cities in Northern Ireland from Ireland?

Then again considering the current cowering attitude towards Islamists and their ilk it is not surprising the overall reaction to the situation in Gaza. Where is the outcry in the media over Islamists attacks on Jews and Jewish businesses in the UK. Where is the condemnation of celebrity Hamas-appeasers like Ken Livingston, Annie Lenox, Bianca Jagger and the rest? The true depth of dhimmi-tude is showing right now.

Its disgraceful, disgusting and despicable how large swathes of the British establishment has reacted to Hamas and its efforts.
