£350,000 for the world's most expensive dog

Yep, this is what it says here.

A Tibetan mastiff with the catchy name of Yangtze River Number Two has reportedly been sold to a woman in the Chinese province of Shaanxi for around £350,000, making it the most expensive dog ever.
And what about condiments used? And what about side dishes, wine, etc.?

This goes on while some other people... oh well...

From wherever it comes?

When the Caudillo doesn't have an external enemy, he is sure as anything to invent one. Or two. Since the deep well of CIA's monthly assassinations of Comical Hugo seems to be exhausted even to Hugo his own self, he is frantic, trying to name a new enemy.

"By the way, we signed some military agreements with Russia. Well ... soon will arrive some little rockets," Chavez said. "We are not going to attack anyone. ... Those are only defense instruments because we are going to defend the nation, from any threat, from wherever it comes."
Good for Hugo, maybe it will buy us all a few nights of sleep, undisturbed by his ululation about his enemies.

Only Hugo's caterwauling about enemies reminds me an old joke about that famous cowboy Elusive Joe, who was dwelling high up there in the Sierra [substitute your own Sierra here] wilderness. His widespread fame and name both stemmed from the fact that he was considered to be uncatchable for many, many years.

"So, why is that guy uncatchable?", every newcomer had to ask after hearing about that cowboy.

"Oh, well", usually answered the locals, "you see, nobody gives a flying donut about him, so no one ever tried to, you know, catch him".

I don't really know why I remembered this story. Old age, I guess.

Drug mule swallowed 106 cocaine packages

A man who swallowed 106 packages of cocaine to smuggle them into the UK was today starting a 10-year jail sentence.
I am missing something in this story. Does it really take that long to... you know... get it all out?

What's common between swastika, genitalia and Sweden?

No, it's not a trick question, judge yourself:

Swedish Foreign Ministry requested this week to temporarily remove two paintings containing swastikas from the museum of modern art in Stockholm.
And the reason is:
The Swedish foreign ministry said this week that the paintings might spark discomfort at the conference for the European Union Foreign Ministers to be held in the city at the end of the week.
But not only swastika:
The museum spokesman confirmed the request and added that a painting containing female genitalia was also removed from the exhibition.
The action raises an interesting question: are people supposed to be riled by both swastika and genitalia? Or, perhaps, the act addresses comfort of guests from different countries? For instance, Brits may feel OK with genitalia and be discombobulated by swastikas, Italians may feel at home with swastika and not... etc., you see what I mean?

But that's all in the realm of guesswork, only one thing is certain: the unmistakable message from Foreign Ministry - it's OK for fellow Swedes to enjoy both swastika and genitalia (maybe even at the same time), but only out of the limelight.

Leave it in the family, so to speak.

Bush lied - Paul Newman NOT died!

This should have been the true and straight headline of the FOX article that was instead something pitiful:

After all, judge for yourself:
Arrest warrants have been issued in Miami for 11 people suspected of falsifying information on hundreds of voter registration cards -- including registering the name of the late actor Paul Newman -- the Florida state attorney told FOXNews.com.
As a sensible reader, what would you believe: that the ever politically astute and correct ACORN folks falsified something or that they were absolutely right, and Paul Newman is alive and kicking? Frolicking somewhere with Elvis, I bet.

So, without further ado:

Free Miami 11!

No passaran!

Newman lives!

Welcome the new relativist: Tom Friedman

If I didn't read it directly from the source, I would have thought someone is pulling my leg. Vigorously, too.

One-party autocracy certainly has its drawbacks. But when it is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people, as China is today, it can also have great advantages.
The man has gone bonkers. Raving mad, I say. And then this:
It is not an accident that China is committed to overtaking us in electric cars, solar power, energy efficiency, batteries, nuclear power and wind power.
Is he aware of the level of pollution created by the factories that produce all these electric cars, solar power equipment etc. in China and some of its neighbors that have become the major polluting sources on Earth?

And I haven't even mentioned the much vaunted Chinese democracy and their touching attention to minorities and dissidents.

Creep...

George Constanza vindicated: yes, the shrinkage is real!

I hope that, being a Seinfeld fan, you remember this ageless piece of dialog:

George: I was supposed to see her. She wasn't supposed to see me.
Jerry: So what?
George: Well ordinarily I wouldn't mind. But...
Jerry: But...
George: Well I just got back from swimming in the pool. And the water was cold...
Jerry: Oh... You mean... shrinkage.
George: Yes. Significant shrinkage!
Jerry: So you feel you were short changed.
George: Yes! I mean, if she thinks that's me she's under a complete misapprehension. That was not me, Jerry. That was not me.
Instead of laughing like mad at hapless George, you should have listened carefully to what he has to say on the subject. Thankfully, after all these years of disregard, we have the theory of shrinkage proven once and for all.
A Croatian man got a nasty surprise when he tried to get out of his deck chair and found his testicles had got stuck.

Mario Visnjic had gone swimming naked in the sea at the Valalta beach in western Croatia, reports 24sata.

His testicles had shrunk while in the cool sea and slipped through the wooden slats when he sat back down on his wooden deckchair.

But as he lay in the sun they expanded back to normal size and got stuck between the slats.

He was eventually freed after he called beach maintenance services on his mobile phone and they sent a member of staff to cut the deck chair in half.
Gesundheit, George! Your honor is safe now, many thanks to Mario Visnjic.

Verdict first - investigation afterwards

It's safe to assume that, like Kofi Annan's report, the conclusion of Justice Richard Goldstone's report is predetermined. When one considers things like a commission member who has already decided that Israel has no right of self-defense, that the commission is accepting phony numbers as testimony and that a (former) UN appointee assumes that serving in the IDF is tantamount to committing a war crime it's reasonable to conclude that regarding Israel, the UN is dedicated to obtaining a conviction not the truth.

The incredible prophecy on CiF

I did a double-take, then a triple-take, still it reads the same:

Libya under Gaddafi is well on its way to becoming a family-owned dictatorship...
No shit...

I guess we'll read in ten (or twenty) years something like this written by the same author:

"Comrade Generalissimo Supreme Caudillo Chavez shows some signs of becoming a potentate of Venezuela."

or

"North Korea, under the glorious leadership of Kim Il XXX is in danger of losing its democratic freedoms."

Unbelievable.

The author's profile:
Raza Naeem is a Pakistani PhD student of Middle Eastern history at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, US. His specialization is in history of the communist movements in the Arab world and Pakistan. He has also been a communist activist in Pakistan for the last eight years.
I don't know what to say. Is that question on membership in the communist party already dropped in US visa application? And what kind of history do they teach in Fayetteville?

Whatever. In any case, they surely know how to pick them in The Guardian...

P.S. Since CiF was mentioned, here comes: The Use of Nazi Analogies on CiF

Elders' answer to Comical Hugo's three wishes

It appears that, while on his current tour of kissing up to a few bloody dictators, Comical Hugo aka Hugo Chavez came up with three requests for Israel. While some of the requests were kind of puzzling, the Elders have decided to give Hugo their undivided attention. After all, what wouldn't we do to see the kid happy and calm? So here are our answers - in the spirit of best effort, we swear:

1. To end our attacks against the people of Libya. Puzzling, but granted. (Still, why would we attack these poor guys, with Hugo's mad buddy doing an exceedingly good job of terrorizing them?)

2. To give back to Syria all occupied territories. Well, most probably. Gradually, after we get all the oil, diamonds, uranium and stuff out of Golan Heights.

3. To take our hands off Latin America. Sorry, Hugo, no can do. We've had so many problems with our home-grown football players, that the recent decision was to close the shop and to annex Brazil instead. So too bad, but no dice.

Hasta la vista, Hugo...

9/9/09 - A Day Without Cats on the Internet?

Pop-culture website Urlesque recently launched a movement that has gained a great deal of steam -- it dubbed tomorrow, 9/9/09, "A Day Without Cats on the Internet," and lobbied other websites to join in its kitty-free pledge.

Norwegians sentenced to death in Congo - for spying?

The two men were found guilty of spying for Norway and for killing a driver in May, according to NRK.

WTF? It reads not like a spy fiction, rather like a bad fantasy pulp.

Something stinks...

Uhu... there is more in Wiki here. These guys definitely look like mercenaries. But spies? Nah...
