Akhmed and the Atomic Matzo Balls

When you prepare to read a book titled Akhmed and the Atomic Matzo Balls or A Novel of International Intrigue, Pork-Crazed Termites, and Motherhood, your first instinctive action will be to look into the author of the opus.

Gary Buslik.

Hm... now this is a seriously rotten character if I have ever seen one. A man after my black and shriveled heart, and no doubt about it. Take, for instance, the following text he is trying to push as his CV:
When I finally got outed as a literature major, my poor mother cried for months, and my father would stride around the house ranting, "Big man! He knows the parts of speech!" After he kicked me out and disowned me, I lived in the airport for a while reciting Henry James for spare change [Ed: probably picking travelers' pockets]. One day a veteran travel writer took pity on me and showed me how, by making hotel and restaurant owners naively believe I would write good reviews about them, they would give me free rooms, meals, and drinks [Ed: read "offed a travel writer and am using his documents and, of course, that Amex Platinum card"].
So, all in all, the man passes the entry exam to the training course in the Elders' organization.

But what about the book? To start with, it has an eye-pleasing cover page:

Of course, exactly as the contents of the book, the cover is sick. So instead of staring at it for a long time and getting queasy, you are advised to open and to read it. And what about the contents? Colleague Bookworm calls it "rich satire". We, the Elders, don't know from satire and when we see one we usually try to kill it. Reading the book, however, caused me no end of worry. The man simply knows too much. How did he, for instance, know about predilection of Mahmoud the Mad (thinly veiled by the name of Akhmed) to matzo balls? This was one of the most strictly kept Elders' secrets, which helped us to raise Mahmoud's radioactivity to the level unknown in history and cause that green halo he was unwittingly bragging about. How did he stumble on the pork-obsessed termites (our Passover present to the Chief Rabbi to eliminate this unclean (but tasty) animal)? There are many other questions related to the information freely presented to the reader. In short, we fear an inside job.

Yes, this book reveals too much. Since we usually don't cry about spilled milk (after all, it's not spilled whiskey) we shall relax, swim with the current and think about various creative ways to re-educate Mr Buslik. As for the book, it definitely contains many thoroughly revolting, brain-curdling, nail-biting scenes that will ensure you will not only be unable to close it before you are through; no, you shall remain wide awake rereading some especially and sickeningly delicious passages. Unsurprisingly, camels are involved in some of them as well. In droves.

Oh, and you shall enjoy a nice tasteful image of a mutated pork-munching termite from time to time too, which feature of the book undoubtedly raises its fair market value.

Now to the main part of this review. After all, adjectives, curses and superlatives do not a rating make. One has to use a reliable and familiar scale, so I shall borrow one from the movie business. So here we go:
  • Sex: plenty of choice toe-curling scenes.
  • Nudity (imaginary, of course, but beggars cannot be choosers): enough for a summer vacation in a nudist camp.
  • Violence: galore.
  • Language: Crude and coarse to the hilt.
Suggested minimal age of the reader: 78 (sedated to prevent possible convulsions).

So what are you waiting for? Go and buy the book. Or, if you are not a tree killer, buy its digital copy. And remember, we, the Elders, are watching, so better hurry.

Rachel Veitch: she got a great mileage out of her Mercury

Remember Rachel Veitch, the intrepid retired nurse and her indestructible Mercury? That was three years ago, and her Mercury is still going strong. Rachel, unfortunately, wouldn't be able to enjoy her venerable ride anymore:

After 576,000 miles -- or more than a trip to the moon and back -- in the same 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente, the 93-year-old Orlando grandmother is stepping on the brakes due to age-related macular degeneration in both eyes.
Still, the car had outlasted three marriages - not a small achievement by any measure.

Besides, end of the ride is not the end of the road, Rachel. Take care - till 120!

The Commentator being rude (and truthful) about George Galloway

Raheem Kassam is the Executive Editor of The Comentator, an online newspaper from which I've extracted items before. As far as British politics is concerned, it's quite right-wing. However, it is entirely on the right and proper side for matters concerning the Middle East. Thus Kassam has a right-on article on George Galloway who, somehow, managed to get elected in the Bradford west By-Election last Thursday.

Early in the article, Kassam states that "It is my opinion that George Galloway is a shameless career politician who has spent more time trying to get elected than he has spent in the House of Commons chamber, actually debating on the issues. If Galloway’s legal team require me to legitimise my views in this regard, I refer them to this picture of this appearance on Big Brother, incidents such as his appearance alongside Zahir Mahmood in this speech and his history of attempting to shut down debates about his character and affiliations, rather than actually answering questions as he most famously did at the US Senate in 2005."

It is also worth quoting a couple of other passages from the article, to show just what sort of person Galloway is. Thus, Kassam also says "Of course, the people of Bradford were attempting to shake off the vile dictator that was their previous MP to replace a seriously ill MP who had to stand down and voted for Galloway as a lifeline for their embattled state voted for Galloway as the result of a highly divisive campaign that played on discord and disenfranchisement rather than unity and a community spirit." He goes on "[Galloway] is a man who once said to Saddam Hussein, “I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability,” and campaigned adamantly against the war that brought the tyrant to justice."

You shouldn't miss all the links within the article, and the "debate" between Christopher Hitchens and Galloway is priceless; no half-way dispassionate observer would give any points to Galloway.

The whole article and the links within it is well worth your time.

Taliban trannies - a new weapon

Unbelievable, what?
The lengths the Taliban are prepared to go to in order to gain access to coalition forces was illustrated yesterday when local police arrested seven men dressed in women's clothing in Mehterlam, Laghman province, east of Kabul.
The most misogynist sect in the whole world dresses up in women clothing?

What is the world coming to?

Thank You Vietnam Vets day

I know that Vietnam war was and remains a deeply divisive subject in American hearts and minds. As a teen sent by the Soviet powers that be to demonstrate against the "imperialist invasion", I didn't have yet any opinion of my own.

I know that many of the American youngsters sent to fight and to die in the rice fields and jungles of Vietnam also didn't have much of an opinion (or an option). However, they fought bravely and died for something that many of their countrymen scoffed at.

It took me some years to grow up and to become grateful to all the Cold war warriors and to the millions of people who worked, fought and died to rid the planet of the Soviet menace. And to understand that the soldiers who fought and died in Vietnam were a part of this chapter of our history.

And to be thankful.

Habima and policies of exclusion

A bunch of British theater professionals – actors, stage directors, playwrights etc, published a protest letter (of course in The Guardian) regarding the invitation extended by the Globe to Israeli national theater Habima.

Interestingly enough, their demand to exclude Habima from the Globe to Globe festival is based on what they call "policies of exclusion practised by the Israeli state". Go figure...

As for the chief reason for excluding Habima, they say the following:

Last year, two large Israeli settlements established "halls of culture" and asked Israeli theatre groups to perform there. A number of Israeli theatre professionals – actors, stage directors, playwrights – declared they would not take part.

Habima, however, accepted the invitation with alacrity, and promised the Israeli minister of culture that it would "deal with any problems hindering such performances".
Of course, in their righteous wrath, authors of the letter don't mention the way Habima deals with the issue (by allowing each person to decide on his/her own participation according to his/her beliefs). Oh well, this would be too much to expect, I guess.

A side question to the bunch of hypocrites: how many of them refuse to appear in the occupied Northern Ireland (to take one example)?

Nick Cohen, Colin Shindler and left antisemitism

I stumbled across this, sort of, on the Standpoint website. It's Nick Cohen's review of Colin Shindler's "Israel and the European Left". Actually, I was chasing down a link in a comments thread elsewhere, but what matters is that I found it!

Cohen starts off with a set of general comments on the original ideological links between Communism and Zionism, before they became, in his own words, separated at birth. Then he comes to Shindler's book. Almost his first direct comment on it is the following: "If [Colin Shindler] has not produced a secret history, then it is a history of a secret in plain view; an account of facts that are available but not discussed. After I interviewed him at Jewish Book Week, members of the audience said they had never before heard anyone examine the racist strain in left-wing thinking, even though it was there from the beginning."

Of course, the readers of this and similar sites will not be at all surprised that this strain, as Cohen puts it, in left-wing thinking. If we weren't aware, we wouldn't be here in the first place. Anne's opinions (another Israel based website, in English) was kind enough to post a longish article by me on the Jewish Book Week, including my reactions to the Shindler/Cohen session.

Exclusive: It is not Azerbaijan where the attack on Iranian nukes will be launched from

Remember: you read it first time here and must be grateful to the Elders for the scoop of the century.

After a prolonged period of FUD: Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, the ruling Iranian Ayatollahs came to a final decision. According to this decision, which is, as mentioned, final, IAF - the Israeli Air Force - received the landing permits at several IAF - Iranian Air Force - bases. In addition, IAF planes will enjoy refueling, repair and other logistics support, including detailed maps, weather reports and everything else that may expedite bombing the heck out of Iranian nuclear installations*.

"We cannot take it anymore," reportedly said one of the senior Ayatollahs. "The endless reports about new plans of attack on our nukes that continue to inundate the capitalist media are driving us bonkers. Our generals are totally exhausted, endlessly relocating the air defense units after each such report. Our radar operators are going blind with tension, reporting incoming Zionist jets every few minutes."

"I am unable to open my favorite bookmarks in the morning, without reading about another detailed plan of attack on our nuclear sites and spoiling my breakfast. For so many years I have been a subscriber to Washington Post (ImamXII@aol.com), to New York Times (MahmoudTheAnonymous.President@hotmail.com), to New Yorker (IslamicCatLover@yahoo.com), and now my fingers tremble each time I touch the keyboard..." confessed Mahmoud (The Mad) Ahmadinejad.

Our agent in place, however, reports that the last straw that caused the drastic decision was the disconnection from the banking network SWIFT. This act prevents the Ayatollahs from downloading the last versions of Angry Birds, causing a great deal of teeth gnashing and despair in the circles of the Iranian ruling elite.

Representatives of the Israeli military are at present on a secret location near Tehran, finalizing the last details of the operation with their Iranian colleagues. The Iranian plans for elimination of the accursed Zionist Entity, according to the rumors, are put on hold until the successful end of the current project.

Provision of air cover to IAF planes by IAF planes in case of USAF interference with the bombing operation is discussed as a possible extra.
