The interesting case of the British soldier that opened fire

There is an expression in Hebrew that could be roughly translated as "To put your head in order". This is exactly what that excellent article by Ben-Dror Yemini might do for you, if you are open to learn something.

This is the story of a soldier who killed in cold blood a terrorist who was lying on the ground wounded and helpless. This did not happen in Israel of 2016, but rather in Afghanistan in 2011, in the notorious Helmand Province. The soldier was Alexander Wayne Blackman, a sergeant in the British Royal Marines.

Google vs Russian spies?

A Russian branch of the Geektimes site published an interesting article:

Google warned Russian journalist about a hacking attempt by intelligence services

Google has been warning the owners of Gmail mailboxes since 2012 about hacking attempts by secret services.

This specific warning was received by a Russian journalist Roman Shleinov, regional editor of the anti-corruption project Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, writes Meduza.io. The report stated that at least 0,1% Gmail users faced such attacks.

Two weeks ago Roman, a member of the Centre for the study of corruption (OCCRP) and member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) turned to VTB for a comment about the wife of the head of VTB Andrey Kostin. The journalist wanted to know whether she is a beneficiary of an offshore company in the Bahamas, as indicated in the "Panamanian archives."

Google did not say how they detect who employs the hacker who "tries to steal the password." Perhaps it is about formal requests by security services (whether satisfied or not).

The punchline comes now, though:

In January 2016 the presidential advisor on the internet, German Klimenko, complained that Google ignores the Russian special services requests. "As a rule, Google is responding to 32 thousand requests per year from FBI or NSA and one request from our law enforcement agencies. We must honestly admit that they do not respond to our requests, they simply ignore them," - he said. According to him, the Russian "criminals" are increasingly using foreign services, while "Russian IT companies cooperate with the authorities". "It is even to their slight competitive advantage"- he added.

Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon or physiognomy debunked once again

Physiognomy (from the Gk. physis meaning "nature" and gnomon meaning "judge" or "interpreter") is the assessment of a person's character or personality from his or her outer appearance, especially the face. The term can also refer to the general appearance of a person, object, or terrain, without reference to its implied characteristics, as in the physiognomy of a plant community.

And why have I recalled this dead pseudo-science? Just because the article on Arutz 7 site* contained a nice picture of the above mentioned minister.

Besides being a nice picture, nothing in it forewarns the reader. No signs of an onset of dementia or any malicious intent or... anyway, a nice man is all one can say looking at this shot. The article, however, tells an amazing story.

When asked how it was possible that the terrorist network which was behind the attacks in Brussels, could hide for a long time in the heart of Brussels, Jambon replied: "Someone who is hiding and receiving support from the population, can remain hidden a long time.”

Jambon, who is a member of the New Flemish Alliance, continued to compare the terrorists to the Jews who hid here during the Nazi occupation: “There are Jewish people who went into hiding for years... and (the Nazi) regime never found them.”

Now go figure it out. A nice looking man, a minister to boot - and such a moron?

Bedtime-story privilege? Welcome to the brave new world.

Telling or reading to your kid a bedtime story or two was an activity I have considered one of the more rewarding and joyful tasks in my rather too busy daily schedule at the relevant period. Lately, when an opportunity raises its head, I mightily enjoy the same with my grandkids.

But time goes by, things change and science doesn't rest on its laurels, not for long anyway. So, seeing as where the progressive modern science is leading, I wasn't too surprised to see this headline:

Professor: If You Read To Your Kids, You’re ‘Unfairly Disadvantaging’ Others

According to a professor at the University of Warwick in England, parents who read to their kids should be thinking about how they’re “unfairly disadvantaging other people’s children” by doing so. In an interview with ABC Radio last week, philosopher and professor Adam Swift said that since “bedtime stories activities . . . do indeed foster and produce . . . [desired] familial relationship goods,” he wouldn’t want to ban them, but that parents who “engage in bedtime-stories activities” should definitely at least feel kinda bad about it sometimes: “I don’t think parents reading their children bedtime stories should constantly have in their minds the way that they are unfairly disadvantaging other people’s children, but I think they should have that thought occasionally,” he said.

Since the good professor was giving an interview to ABC Radio, saying A wasn't enough, apparently, so he went on to say B - or possibly even Z, going for the jugular of the topic:

At one point, Swift even flirted with the idea of “simply abolishing the family” as a way of “solving the social justice problem” because “there would be a more level playing field” if we did, but ultimately concluded that “it is in the child’s interest to be parented” and that “parenting a child makes for what we call a distinctive and special contribution to the flourishing and well-being of adults.”

Social justice. Yes, professor Swift is an expert in that domain, judging by his biography on the Warwick university site.

While at Oxford I was Founding Director of the Centre for the Study of Social Justice.

So what are the new things I have learned from all of the above?

• That too much learning doesn't necessarily equal wisdom? Nah, not news.
• That communal incubators with subsequent mechanised schooling equal for all is vastly preferable to the existing system that breeds inequality and, Brother forbid, parental involvement? Somewhat old, too.
• That family is an obsolete patriarchal construct created to enslave women and to raise children in the perverted capitalist environment? Well known and bemoaned.
• "Level playing field"? No, old as pyramids. Or, at least, as Karl Marx.

So, all in all, the only thing of interest, and even that very limited for me, is the fact that there is a university in Warwick, England. Not that I know where Warwick is, anyway...

To those who might not know who Henry Makow, PhD, is:

The wondrous life and deeds of "Rabbi" Moshe Aryeh Friedman, a vermin

I don't know how many of you remember this revolting scene from 2006 (or thereabout):

The infamous rabbi, according to the article, is not only a despicable piece of shit, but also an idiot who cannot even produce a consistent story, not to mention his self-aggrandizing lies:

Well, and what is our good (even if self-appointed) "Rabbi" Moshe Aryeh Friedman is doing these days? To start with, he decided to change his garb. From an ultra-Orthodox uniform to a less conspicuous frum, but one with substance, whose surroundings reflect his new station in life.

In this picture "Rabbi" Friedman made himself comfy in a five star hotel in Doha, Qatar. If you browse his Facebook page a bit, you shall immediately notice that the newborn "Rabbi" moves in exalted circles of the nouveau riches now, in places like Marbella (Spain), Dubai, Vienna, Warsaw, Paris, hobnobbing with celebs, politicians and whatnot. He is proudly reporting on his family's shopping sprees in the places mentioned. It might be interesting to learn what are the sources of funding for all that opulence, but certainly it is not something our "Rabbi" is interested in disclosing.

Dov Segal in his post The life and times of Ahmadinejad’s pet Jew tells the story, and it's a fascinating read. Just a quote from this post:

Elton John's declaration of loyalty - Haaretz: 1; Ynet: 0

The story, greedily picked up by all kinds of anti-Israeli (sorry, anti-Zionist) folks, sounded more or less like this:

Famous producer Shuki Weiss alleged that the British superstar was required to sign a declaration of loyalty; the Interior Ministry called this a 'first-class lie' and are considering suing for defamation.

Shuki Weiss announced on Monday, "The Ministry of the Interior required that Elton John sign a declaration of loyalty as a condition of his receiving a work visa." The international promoter and producer was speaking at a panel in the anti-BDS conference held by Yedioth Ahronoth.

The quote above belongs to an Ynet article, which continues in the same vein for some while.

Haaretz, however, no matter how much I dislike saying it, have done a much better reporting job. The reporter was diligent enough to dig up the "loyalty declaration" Mr Weiss was referring to:

Responding to a query from Haaretz, Weiss said he brought up the form to "illustrate the lack of cooperation and support by the government in holding international cultural events in Israel." 

Here is the offending form, produced by Haaretz (click to enlarge):

(The text referred as "loyalty declaration" is marked by red squiggle). As one who happened to fill in quite a few entry visa permit forms in my life, I haven't found anything out of ordinary or offensive in the text. Indeed, in the similar forms invented by bureaucracies in other countries, the related questions sometimes spread on whole page(s) and are much more pain in the neck to fill in. And more then certainly, the text has nothing to do with loyalty of any kind.

Well, to make the long story short: a) the "famous producer" Shuki Weiss seem to be a jerk; b) Ynet have done a sloppy journalistic job, which fact inevitably leads to c) kudos to Haaretz.

What can I add but a bit of a conspiracy theory of my own? I was trying to look up the story of that PhD title near the name, and Wiki readily provided the info:

In 2015, she received a Ph.D. from Antioch University with a dissertation on Hugo Chávez.

It is well known that the above mentioned Hugo Chávez aka Comical Hugo croaked in 2013, so it is not the news about her PhD that done him in. Probably the rumors of her intention to write it were the last straw...

Temple of Buddha in Elista

This surreal story started about two days ago.

The incident took place in Elista [Kalmykia] on Saturday night, April 2nd. A 22-year-old athlete [from Dagestan] with teammates free from the competition went to a Buddhist temple, urinated [or defecated, it is unclear from the various reports] right there, and kicked a statue of Buddha in the nose. He shared this act on a social network Periscope.

Elista residents who have seen this video, arrived at the hotel where the athlete stayed and forced him to apologize on his knees. Further development of the conflict was stopped when the police arrived at the hotel. Resident of Dagestan was detained and taken to the department of Ministry of Internal Affairs.

And the process of retribution was recorded too, also poorly:

The tournament in freestyle wrestling was canceled. As the organizers explained, the decision was dictated by the fact that the incident cast a shadow over the event.

But, kneeling or not kneeling, the perp remained in the nick, and the authorities decided to take it to heart for a change. The consequences of the extracurricular activity might be quite serious for the hooligan in question:

The athlete from Dagestan, who desecrated a statue of Buddha in Elista, may be associated with terrorist groups such as prohibited in the Russian Federation "Islamic State" (IS/ISIL). This opinion was expressed on Sunday, April 3, at the radio station "Moscow Speaks" by a member of the council of state religious expertise at the Ministry of Justice, Roman Silantyev.

As you can see, the powers that be decided to throw at the perp not just the whole book but all the addendums and interpretations of the criminal codex.
