Scientists are on the verge of growing artificial meat in laboratories without the need for animal slaughter, according to a report cited Thursday by The Herald Sun -- with one expert predicting a stem cell sausage might be just six months away.I hope that slowly but surely we can make peace with our vegetarian friends.
Only two hurdles could be in the way, as I see it now:
- Does a sausage grown from a stem cell have a soul? Religious authorities will have to deal with this one.
- Stem cell: does it suffer when being fried, boiled or grilled? The Animal Liberation Front worthies will have to give us all an answer.

This is grand. Test-tube seal flipper coming soon!
That to start with...
I dunno about the ALF I would have thought pro lifers might have a word or two to say about stem cell grub!
Just one question:
Is it Kosher?
You bet they will.
It appears that the original cells come from a pig, but I don't think that a rabbi was already consulted. Anyway, what works with a pig will work with a cow, I guess.
This is pretty amazing. I wonder if they'll sell "do-it-yourself" suasage" kits for the thrifty housefrau. What if something goes wrong and the sausage grows legs and runs away? Or bites you? I can see the headlines: "Stem Cell Sauasage Eats Five Year Old Child - Scientist Arrested".
Yep, I agree that we may come to it yet.
The Greens'll kill it (so to speak) same way they did with genetically-altered crops which were going to feed the hungry. They don't care about the hungry.
But the ALF may come down on our side, and then everyone will keep quiet. No one wants to have ALF against them.
