The Guardian's Operation Clark County - a Welsh conspiracy?

It's a fragment of ancient history by now, as things develop lately (from conspiracy to conspiracy). Hardly anyone remembers the grand idea of world's rightful participation in US elections. But hardly anyone could have characterised (yes, I shall leave that "s" there in spite of the spell checker screaming his little heart out at me) the outcome of the affair in this sublime way:

It was as if all the good work of cultural ambassadors like the Spice Girls, Tony Blair and Helen Mirren had been crushed under a giant statue of Terry-Thomas relieving himself into a Jesus-shaped apple pie while waving a North Vietnamese flag.
