Re Hagel, the cut won't actually start until 2015. They're going back to the high-tech-as-force-multiplier concepts which were pretty well disproved in Afghanistan and Iraq. Not that generals learn quickly. Or pols, ever. They'll be putting everyone back in thin-skin Humvees and driving them over mines again.
Stupid ideas seem to come and go in circles.
Well, if you are going to cut the federal budget in any serious way as the Republicans are demanding, you have to include defense spending as well. Of course if the Republicans were willingly to raise the taxes on their billionaire buddies, we might not have to reduce govt. spending.
Feb. was the 12th anniversary of the brutal murder of Daniel Pearl. There were a number of stories about this tragic event. His close friend Asra Q. Nomani talks about Daniel, his murder and her tracking down and identifying his killers through the Pearl Project in her article, "This is Danny Pearl's Final Story" at http://www.washingtonian.com/projects/KSM/index.html
Daniel's father, Judea, two years ago on the 10th anniversary of his death published a poem entitled "The Lions Den" in "The New Yorker" . Link to it at http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2012/02/poem-to-daniel-pearl.html
This year Israeli musician David Broza made an adaptation of this poem in his song, "The Lions Den" at http://www.la.com/stage-screen/ci_24949229/israeli-musician-david-broza-keeps-daniel-pearls-memory.html
The problem with the idea of raising taxes on the rich folks is that, aside of satisfaction for those who don't have the same kind of money, it hardly promotes the poor ones. It was tried many times in history, as you know...
Thanks for all the links, David.
