The Beard is so late for checkout that his hat is already full of holes, I am afraid.

Hmm had Bin Laden been a US agent I would imagine that the WTC would still grace the New York skyline...

Believe me, Jams, you really don't want to go into "if ... then... else" kind of logic with this conspinut.

Nor with Fidel, in fact.

Fidel sounds crazy as the poor homeless street people who go around in public talking loudly to themsevles! Still Fidel looks better than his fellow Caudilo*, Franco did during his last years of his reign in Spain.

(Bad puns such as "the fading reign in Spain" was promenient the last years of Franco's dictatorship.)

*Castro's family came from the same province in Spain as Franco. Somel years ago, Castro recieved a warm welcome when he visited his family's hometown there. Us Latins are not too concerned with idealogy. It is enough that a Strong Man rants well from a balconey and looks good on horseback or nowadays, a tank turret.

Once again, I am sorry for the multiple posts. Thought I hit the post button only once.

You know, David, I just don't remember the last years of Franco. Of course, he wasn't very popular where I was then.

And yes, I remember reading on Fidel's roots, there was even a rumor... oh well, it's another story...

But while you are right about Latinos being easily impressed by smooth talkers, it's correct about any other nation too.

No problem really, it cleans up quite easily.

Franco was not very popular where I was either. Remember a photo of Franco addressing a Phalangist rally about a year or so before he officially died. Franco looked like death warmed over, but still had a good size crowd giving him the Fascist salute. It looked like something out of a WWII history. Pretty weird to see it in the 1970s.

I mention about Franco's official death because there have been stories over the years that Franco actually died at least several months before his death was annonced. It is said that a retired barber from his home province of Galicia impersonated Franco while Franco's aides arranged for an orderly transition to King Juan Carlos. The movie, "Moon over Parador" in which Richard Dreyfess potrays an American actor who is forced to impersonate a deceased Latin American dictator was inspired by these stories.

(Apologize in advance if this results in multiple postings.)

Anyway, he's dead, unlike some other dictators, and that is where his advantage is ;)
