Sensible stuff. While nothing would give me greater pleasure than to see the Mullahs and the Rev Guards/Basij thrown into the gutter, (certainly for the sake of Iranian friends), now is not the time for war, despite the shrieks of idiots
One question. When has the Iranian government ever been sane?

I would say that sanity isn't the question, rather the instinct of self-preservation. No one wants to perish, even the Ayatollahs.
A good analysis. Agree with that however nasty, belligent and crazy sounding Ahamdinejad and some other Iranian leaders sound, Iran's rulers are not insane and definitely not suicidial. Iran may be the world's biggest supporter of terrorism, some might argue that Pakistan is, but what Iran does has always been well calculated as to what they can get away with.
The chief threats from a nuclear armed Iran would be 1) that with atomic weapons Iran would have a detterent to prevent retailiation against their country for whatever acts of terror they sponsor around the world and 2) Iran's mullahs might give an atomic bomb to one of the terrorist groups they support to explode in Israel, the US or elsewhere in the world. Both these points already apply to nuclear-armed Pakistan whose powerful InterServices Intelligence (ISI) agency and other parts of the Pakistani military has ties to the Taliban and perhaps even Al Qaida.
I don't think an attack on Iran is unnecessary, but it could be made unnecessary. There has to be, at least, a credible threat of an attack, and it has to be clear that the attack that is being credibly threatened would target more--ruinously more for Iran--than nuclear and missile sites. Then it would be unnecessary.
Yes, that's true.
I am not sure Rubin is totally against the attack, if a right moment and right methods are chosen. He is mostly against the current hysteria in the media.
