Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras, and Carl Young RIP

This is a loss to tornado chasers community and to the atmospheric science.

Here is a eulogy for the three from Weather Channel:

And here Tim explaining some of what he was doing for so many years:

Good men, all three.

These fellows seem to have had at least a claim to scientific value in what they did, though the ones I have met are mainly thrill seekers. But even the thrill seekers really risk no one but themselves.

Unlike many of the so-called storm chasers, these 3 men actually chased storms for scientific reasons. To gather information on tornadoes in the hope of understanding them better, designing better shelters and saving lives.

They will be missed.

I would say Samaras did quite a lot for study of tornadoes, placing all kinds of new equipment where no one dared before him.
