Happy Chanukah or 8 days to make your Christian friends envious of not being Jewish.
Happy, happy, happy! (in US this a new reference to the show Duck Dynasty)
Insignificant holiday, yes, but still fun. And because it lasts so long, the envy can be pretty intense. Besides, if you get curious about the Maccabees and dip into the history, it's pretty astounding, their turbulent dynasty.
Chanukah is not minor and not insignificant. We say whole-Hallel every day of Chanukah (unlike the last six days of Pesach when we only say half-Hallel). There is a Torah reading. Some people have special customs for the fifth night. My kids are getting some time off from school. What do people want from Chanukah's life? Stoning for doing work?
Thanks Katie, and same to you.
Heh. Thanks. Goes to show how ignorant I am of modern show business.
Well, re insignificant - see Yitzchak's remark, I don't really think so. And yes, Maccabees's time were interesting too, almost like today.
I know, I know, Yitzchak. That poster was just for fun. As for stoning - it may come yet...
Really good (and easy reading) explication of the Maccabean history in this new book I recommend: http://tinyurl.com/ac53law
For the observant, of course not. For the unobservant, maybe the freedom aspect. Otherwise...
I purely love that part of the review: "From King David to Barack Obama". Tee hee. Oh well, maybe once when I am pensioned off. Oops...
In fact, aside of the freedom aspect and history, there is also children's enjoyment. Second only to Purim.
Happy Hanukkah, Snoopy, to you and all the Elders and all the Members of the Tribe, wherever you may be.
Thanks, David!
Snoopy, while you and your fellow Members of the Tribe are lighting candles on Menorahs to celebrate Hannukah, we Christians are lighting candles every Sunday in December to mark Advent, the period of waiting for Jesus' birth.
One nice thing about both Hanukkah and Christmas is the amount of sweets, candies and drink that is consumed.
So what you are saying in effect is that these two holidays are dentists' holidays ;-)
