Rachel Veitch: she got a great mileage out of her Mercury

Remember Rachel Veitch, the intrepid retired nurse and her indestructible Mercury? That was three years ago, and her Mercury is still going strong. Rachel, unfortunately, wouldn't be able to enjoy her venerable ride anymore:

After 576,000 miles -- or more than a trip to the moon and back -- in the same 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente, the 93-year-old Orlando grandmother is stepping on the brakes due to age-related macular degeneration in both eyes.
Still, the car had outlasted three marriages - not a small achievement by any measure.

Besides, end of the ride is not the end of the road, Rachel. Take care - till 120!

She must have been an amateur mechanic. That was truly an awful car. I drove one once or twice in its, uh, prime. About as reliable as Obama's promises to Israel.

She probably got, by a pure chance, a good specimen of the series.

Better car than what is available today.  Can you imagine one of today's cars lasting 10 years?

Not from what Dick says, but yes, it's a good mileage. One point, though: Mercedes engines are built for about a million miles before overall.

Oh, come now. Today's cars routinely last a decade. My own CRV is eight years old and very reliable. 100K on the speedo is routine now. That was the last gasp of Detroit iron in the 60s.

Yes, but 600,000 is relatively rare, not to mention a round million miles.

Do not know about the 1964 Mercury Comet. The 1965 Mustang, though, is a real classic.
