The genius of Airplane and its Naked Gun sequals was take actors who had been cast in the 50s and 60s as granite-jaw heroes and put them in parts that spoofed their old now seemingly unrealistic heroic roles. Leslie Nielsen was the best at it, but Lloyd Bridges was awfully funny as well as the Airport Manager who is revealed in stages as a smoking, boozing, pill-popping and finally glue-sniffing addict!
PS: As a liberal I cannot avoid mentioning the brief part of a conservative TV commentator who says of the endangered airplane passengers and crew: "Well the passengers knew the risks when they bought their tickets, (pause) I say, Let It (the airplane) Crash!"
