It takes a whole country's leading newspaper to raise and pamper a well-meaning doofus who is able to put it this way:
There is a civil war in Islam today between the forces of decency and modernism and the suicidal jihadists. This stuff only stops when the Muslim forces of decency triumph — and delegitimize and crush the barbarism of Al Qaeda. It takes a village, and it’s going to take a while.Yeah, keep waiting, Tom.
Hat tip: Soccer Dad.

Ach I only wish it were true and forces of decency woould and could crush the fanatical scumbags
The reason I am calling this character a doofus in this case (there are many other cases he behaves in this manner) is, as you correctly guessed, that waiting for Muslim forces of decency is a permanent job. No risk of becoming unemployed in the next 100 years or so. Unfortunately - I agree with you.
Whatever happened to Tom Friedman? I once had a lot of respect for him. I even bought his book about olive oil for my husband's birthday. He has become the most needy journalist in America and that's saying something.
That Friedman, what a dreamer. Have you seen the mansion he lives in? Must be trying to ensure that no happy Mooselim pitches a bomb through the double front door.
Why would I care about seeing his mansion? He proves lately with almost each article how full of himself and, incidentally, how full of shit he is.
His mansion or the lack of it will not change anything in my personal opinion about him.
Friedman and olive oil? Wow...
It was a joke, snoops; a poor one, obviously:

No, I can see it's my ignorance that caused that response. Mea culpa.
His mansion shows that he's pleasing somebody more than the NYTimes which isn't likely paying him enough to take care of his mortgage. Maybe the Saudis?
I believe his parents or his spouse parents are wealthy. Or something in this vein...
