Do you know how ridiculous this sounds to people from the West Coast? I am not from the West Coast, but I bet they have the same feeling about this as I (I'm from MD) had when NC got 1 inch of snow (when I was visiting).
Having had lived in LA I laughed at the "Earthquake Damage" that is being shown.
Show me down buildings, windows blown out and dead bodies.
It was very unsettling when it hit at 1:51 PM local time today in Arlington, Virginia. I was in the bathroom in my sixth floor condo apartment. At first I thought that there was some sort of construction work going on, then as the rocking became greater I realized it was an earthquake. This was the first time I had experienced one and having the ground move under me was making me dizzy when it stopped. There was not an evacuation of my building. For all the rocking there was no damage to my apartment. The only things that fell were a few books off the shelves and the Miss August pinup. A couple pictures also had to be straightened and that was it. A lot of shaking, but little if any damage and no deaths or serious injuries was the result of today's quake as far as the Washington DC area was concerned.
PS: The nearest nuclear plants on the North Anna river between DC and Richmond shut down sucessfully.
This makes me nervous. I've been living in LA for about 10 years and I haven't been in an earthquake bli ayin hara.
Cracks in the top of the Washington Monument aren't so amusing. I've seen pics of cars smashed by collapsed brick walls. But since the epicenter was inland there's not likely to be a tsunami.
Yep, I have a few links to the West Coast. So I know and agree.
Uhu...
Well, David, now you can feel that you've visited LA. Take care.
Yeah. Always better to be avoided. My personal memories from one I experienced (6.2 or something close) are rather unsettling.
Well, everyone should be mentally ready to one. No place in the world is secure against quakes.
First the earthquake, now Hurricane Irene will be roaring up the east coast this weekend. At least it now seems likely that Washington area will be spared the full force of the storm. Eastern North Carolina & New Jersey along with New York City and New England may not be so lucky.
PS: As far as earthquakes are concerned, Snoopy, once is definitly enough!
It may look like that crank was right and the deity is angry with East coast for some reason.
Anyway, take care.
