Hassan Rouhani for Nobel Prize! Yep.

Not a joke that one:

In fact, the tweet by CiF Watch is somewhat imprecise: it is not the readers' poll result, it is the result of the poll of the Guardian journalists - the thinking and writing "elite". But, not being a joke, it shows you how demented are the Guardianistas.

I, personally, would suggest that Rouhani share the prize with Denis Rodman.

Without our traditions, our lives would be shaky...

...And what tradition is more traditional than good old blood libel?

This ancient ballad comes to us courtesy of BBC and Steeleye Span. Lyrics has been modified somewhat - "Jew Daughter" became "lady gay", but the song is still pretty good.

Russia's Sochi Games: if there, you better keep shtum

It looks like the upcoming Winter Olympics might provide more work to Edward Snowden. This time, as it follows from a very detailed Agentura.ru article Surveillance at the Sochi Olympics 2014, the object of Snowdens' incisive analysis and subsequent whistleblowing should be the Russian FSB.

Not that there is much difference in the goals pursued by NSA and FSB. Both outfits see the rivers of information flowing out there, both are frothing at the mouth and chafing at the bit, thinking about all that treasure being available. And you already know something of what NSA is doing about it. There is, however, a significant difference in the way the other guys are doing it, compared with relatively humble and self-conscious NSA. They start from the same techno-thrilling roots:

SORM’s tactical and technical foundations were developed by a KGB research institute in the mid-1980s, and recent technological advances have updated the system. Now, the SORM-1 system captures telephone and mobile phone communications, SORM-2 intercepts Internet traffic, and SORM-3 collects information from all forms of communication, providing long-term storage of all information and data on subscribers, including actual recordings and locations.
But then the similarity starts to fray at the edges:
In most Western nations, law enforcement or intelligence agencies must receive a court order before wiretapping (in the UK a warrant signed by a Secretary of State, usually the Home Secretary). That warrant is sent to phone operators and Internet providers, which are then required to intercept the requested information and forward it to the respective government agencies. In Russia, FSB officers are also required to obtain a court order to eavesdrop, but once they have it, they are not obliged to show it to anybody except their superiors in the FSB.
And:
Telecom providers have no right to demand that the FSB show them the warrant.
Furthermore:
The providers are required to pay for the SORM equipment and its installation, but they are denied access to the surveillance boxes.
Hilarious, ain't it? And more:
The FSB does not even need to contact the ISP’s staff; instead the security service calls on the special controller at the FSB HQ that is connected by a protected cable directly to the SORM device installed on the ISP network.
If you desire more info on the technical side:
What was not so widely announced is that by April 2011 most of telecom equipment suppliers to Russia modified their WiFi equipment according to new Russian rules introduced by the FSB. According to the rules, all means of encryption in the wireless controllers should be disabled, if sent to wired network segments. It means customers could use wireless encryption in public to secure their communications against casual eavesdropping by hackers but the FSB would still be able to intercept the traffic.
What it means for the Sochi visitors, in short, is that if you rely on your provider's server for encryption of the info you send from your laptop, smartphone etc., your information is wide open to the FSB peepers. Not that there aren't other, even more sophisticated means to get to your secrets, but let's leave it for experts to tell.

So, if you are in Sochi this winter, better avoid forwarding your critical impressions to your friends in the West via phone, Internet and any other means of communications. Unless you are a CIA agent, equipped by a latest and most sophisticated in satellite phones and encryption and... whatever words they use in these thrillers.

Well, back to Mr Snowden: seeing as he is currently unemployed (?) and has some free time to spare, I would suggest that he use some of that time to fight for freedom of Sochi Olympics from his accommodating hosts of FSB. Let's see where it gets him...

More on the subject from the same source: NSA Is No Match for the FSB.

On a related subject: video surveillance, which has more to do with the physical security of the games, I am proud to learn that:
Surveillance analysis equipment provided by the Israeili company NICE Systems. In September 2012 NICE announced that the city of Sochi got the complete NICE Surveillance portfolio as part of «Safe Sochi» initiative.
The pride is tempered, though, by my understanding that video surveillance could be used for nefarious purposes as well. On the other hand, you can't make an omelet and all that crap... good for NICE, anyway.

Food for thought

If any country in Europe were to fund a refugee NGO in Poland, supporting the German right of return, the funding country’s ambassador would be given less than 24 hours to leave Poland. Israel will not expel anyone. Israel acts with a slightly bizarre tolerance. Israel tries to be more righteous then the pope himself. But certain European countries have crossed all the red lines. It is Israel’s right to draw those lines again.
Ben-Dror Yemini in ToI article Europe wouldn’t allow it, why should Israel? Good shout.

Janet Yellen - our (Elders') other man in the Fed

Important: this post is gender-insensitive, "our man" having a functional, gender-free meaning.

We have considered that, while Mr Bernanke is doing a great job in controlling the flow of money in the (only) correct direction, a bit of support could never hurt.

So there.

On the other hand, we are not absolutely sure that nomination like that doesn't have something to do with what I would call "Pharaoh and the enema" principle.

Glen Jenvey who screamed "Jew!"

When I have seen the somewhat odious headline Alan Sugar - A Jew Who Screamed Racist, I didn't expect to stumble on a story. Not very exciting, but still somewhat interesting...

The author of that article, one Glen Jenvey, is fairly sizzling with indignation:

British Police show that there is one law for the rich and another for the poor, while Alan Sugar who makes money from cheap imports from slave labor mocks Asian Workers on twitter and police claim there is no criminal offence in his Racist vile sick humor at Asian children.
Since at the moment of reading this I didn't know more about Alan Sugar than I knew about Glen Jenvey, the quote sent my fingers on a search. First of all, the offending tweet:

What can I say? The joke is a bit forced and, as far as good taste is concerned, is kind of borderline. However, calling it racist will be quite reaching.

As for the author of the joke, Alan Michael Sugar, Baron Sugar: undeniably rich and possibly, like any terminally rich man, he has a few skeletons in his closet. However, the fact that he is Jewish is not one of these skeletons, and the reason for repeating that fact no less than five times in a relatively short article escaped me. Statements like "The police will not arrest Alan Sugar as he is white and Jewish and will pay officers money..." tend to attract attention, wouldn't you agree? So I have decided to look at the author.

And here I was quite surprised. First, to learn that Glen Jenvey is a British journalist: the English of that article is so atrocious* that it would fit the standard one expects from a North Korean site. Then, there is an illustrious record of Mr Jenvey's heroic deeds, such as infiltration of radical Islamic groups, Tamil Tigers etc, with subsequent exposure of their hateful and genocidal plans.

Then some strange notes appear, introducing dissonance in this song of anti-extremist valor.
On 7 January 2009 the UK tabloid newspaper The Sun ran an exclusive front-page story saying that participants in a discussion on Ummah.com, a British Muslim internet forum, had made a "hate hit list" of British Jews to be targeted by extremists over the 2008–2009 Israel–Gaza conflict.
But then:
The UK magazine Private Eye, later said that Jenvey, posting to the forum under the pseudonym "Abuislam", had in fact created the only evidence that pointed to anything other than a peaceful letter-writing campaign. The story has since been removed from The Sun's website following complaints to the UK's Press Complaints Commission.
The Guardian had some interesting tidbits to add to the story:
A self-styled terrorism expert who was behind a fabricated Sun front-page story about Lord Sugar and other Jewish figures being on an Islamic extremist hitlist has been arrested on suspicion of inciting religious hatred against Jews.
And here Lord Sugar comes into the picture for the first time:
Sir Alan Sugar, who was named as a terror target in Jenvey's story, instituted legal action against The Sun for publishing the article on 23 February 2009.
So, as you can see, the hero infiltrator has some history with the Jews in general and Sir Alan Sugar in particular.

The story doesn't exactly end here, since:
Jenvey subsequently said he converted to Islam, and released a full apology for the story on 19 August 2009. His apology cited the "chance to install fear back in Jews who were killing Muslims" as his motive.
There is a further denial of that quote, but one thing is sure: Jenvey is a sleazy character with quite a grudge against them Jooz. So be it.

(*) Even if I say so.

Minister Yisrael Katz and the stupid lizard

Listening to the news today, I have again thanked (in my thoughts only) the chief Elder who hasn't so far forced me to cover the life and deeds of our illustrious ministers and their minions, leaving it to be my hobby only. So Minister Yisrael Katz didn't appear too many times on these pages, the last time only being memorable because of an outlandish initiative. These days Mr Katz serves us all as Minister of Transportation and, between other things, is responsible for the new railroad to Eilat. While some people doubt the economic justification for 30 billion shekels (about 8 billion dollars) project, it seems that as an alternative to Suez canal for transfer of goods from the Red Sea to Mediterranean basin it may bring some unexpected benefits. So I am all for it.

When the plans for the railway reached the local Environment Protection Agency, the excrement hit the air-conditioning. Of course, typically for everything any government touches everywhere, the engineers planning the tracks didn't consult the nature experts, and the planned railway goes straight through a small but important habitat near Eilat, where several families of Egyptian spiny-tailed lizards eke their living, only a few meters from the main highway connecting Eilat with the rest of the country. Puny-sized as it is, the habitat of this endangered species will simply disappear under the railway, taking the lizards with it. Naturally (no pun intended), EPA people are in a serious snit about this issue (and several others related to the railway).

In an interview today, Minister Katz expressed his personal displeasure with the "Greens that cry about some stupid lizard that may be squashed". Ehehe... what can I say? When a multibillion project like this one is planned, a few shekels could definitely be found to resolve the problem, letting the lizards be. As for their value to humanity, compared to other species and their intellectual level - why, we can use the Minister himself for comparison, why not?. Since we don't have much material (aside of that link) for judging the intellect, the best way seems to be to compare the pictures of the two species (I am a great believer in the look and see method).

You can see that, for fairness sake, I have presented only the upper part of the contestands' bodies. Because, being corpulent as he is, Mr Katz will be put at a considerable disadvantage. As for the value of each contestant to humanity - just read that link... anyway, I am far from being sure that it is a good idea for Minister Yisrael Katz to call anyone, lizards included, stupid...

So there. Now, when you got the whole picture, you can watch an entertaining episode from the Egyptian spiny-tailed lizards' daily routine (parental discretion advised):
